Wix vs Custom Website for a Small Business: Which One I’d Pick

Illustration comparing a drag-and-drop template layout with a custom-built service business site plan showing service pages, city pages and a booking button

If you run a plumbing company, a cleaning business or a roofing crew, at some point someone tells you to “just throw up a Wix site.” Sometimes that’s fine advice. Sometimes it costs you calls for years. I run a local service business myself and built its site from scratch, and now I build sites for other service businesses. Here’s how I’d decide between the two.

What’s the real difference between Wix and a custom website?

Wix is a website builder. You pick a template, drag blocks around, and Wix hosts the site for you on a monthly plan. You’re renting space on their platform, and you work inside what their editor lets you do.

A custom website is built for your business by a person. The pages, the layout and the words are made around your real services and the towns you cover. It’s hosted wherever you or your designer choose, and it can be changed in any way you need later.

Neither one is automatically good or bad. The difference that matters to a service business is simple: a builder gives you a website, and a custom build gives you a website that was set up to bring in calls. Those aren’t always the same thing.

Is Wix good enough for a service business?

For some businesses, yes. I’d rather see a plain Wix site than nothing. My first “website” was a Google Doc with a QR code, and people thought it looked like a scam. I went five or six months like that. Any real site would have been better.

Wix is a reasonable choice if:

  • You’re just starting and need something live this week while you figure out the business.
  • You work one town and most of your work comes from referrals anyway.
  • You like building it yourself and actually have the evenings to keep it updated.

It starts to fall short when you want the site to do the selling. A landscaper covering six towns, an HVAC company that wants booked service calls, an electrician who wants to show up for “panel upgrade” in three cities. That’s when you need city pages written for each town, booking that plugs into the software you already use, and someone who knows what to put where. A template won’t do that thinking for you.

Can a Wix site rank on Google?

Yes, it can. Google doesn’t punish a site for being built on Wix. When a builder site doesn’t rank, the platform is rarely the real reason. It’s what got built on it.

Here’s what I usually see on DIY builder sites for service businesses:

  • One page trying to cover everything. Drain cleaning, water heaters and repiping all on the home page. Google wants a page for each service.
  • No city pages. If you serve five towns but your site only mentions one, you’ll mostly show up in one.
  • Page titles left on the default. “Home | My Site” tells Google nothing.
  • Huge photos and extra apps that make the site slow on a phone, which is where most of your customers are searching.
  • No connection to the Google Business Profile. Different phone number, different business name, no link.

All of that can be fixed on Wix if you know how. A custom build just starts with it done. If your site is already live and quiet, I went through the usual causes in why your service business website isn’t getting calls.

Which one costs less over time?

Wix looks cheaper on day one, because there’s no build fee. But it’s a bill that never ends. You pay the plan every month or year, then often extra for things like bookings, more storage or apps. Plans and prices change, so check the current price yourself and add it up for three years, not one month.

Then add your time. Every evening you spend moving blocks around is an evening you didn’t spend on jobs or with your family. Put an honest hourly value on that.

A custom build is the opposite shape: a bigger cost up front, then a small monthly fee for hosting and upkeep. As an example with our own prices: a Plumb build is $899 one-time, and the Keep Level care plan is $79 a month. That’s $1,847 for the first year and $948 a year after that.

The better question isn’t which is cheaper. It’s which one pays for itself. If an average job is worth $X to you, divide the build price by X. That’s how many extra jobs the site has to bring in to cover itself. For a roofer or an HVAC company, that might be one job. For a salon it might be a couple of dozen appointments. I broke this down further in how much a small business website costs.

Do I own my website if I build it on Wix?

This is the one most people don’t think about until it’s too late. You can own your domain name on Wix, but the site itself lives on Wix. You can’t take that site and move it to another host. If you ever want to leave, you’re rebuilding from scratch.

That doesn’t matter much for a small starter site. It matters a lot once you’ve put years of pages, photos and reviews into it.

With a custom site, you should own the files and the domain outright. Ask about this before you hire anyone, whoever builds it. At Level Digital Studio, you own the site and the domain, and if you ever cancel a care plan, you keep everything. When I built the site for my own business, I custom-coded it for the same reason: I wanted it to be mine, with online booking and nine city and service-area pages, and no platform deciding what I could change.

The short version

  • Wix is fine for a brand-new business, a one-town operation, or an owner who likes building it themselves.
  • A Wix site can rank. When it doesn’t, it’s usually missing service pages, city pages, real titles and speed.
  • Wix is cheaper on day one. Add up three years of the plan, the add-ons and your own time before you decide.
  • Work out payback: build price divided by what one job is worth to you.
  • On Wix you can own the domain, but not a site you can move. With custom, make sure you own both.
  • If you cover several towns and want booked jobs from the site, custom is usually the better buy.

  • Care plans. Keep Level is $79 a month for hosting, backups, updates and an hour of edits. Keep Level+ is $99 a month with more edits, speed monitoring and a quarterly SEO check-up.
  • Already on Wix? A $149 site audit tells you in writing whether to keep it and fix the SEO, or rebuild. It’s credited toward a build if you go ahead.
  • Extras. Extra city pages are $149 each, branded email setup is $79, and a logo and brand kit starts at $350.

Questions business owners ask me

Is Wix good enough for a small service business?

It can be for a brand-new business, a one-town operation or an owner who likes building it themselves. It falls short when you need city pages, booking tied to your job software and a site set up to bring in calls.

Can a Wix website rank on Google?

Yes. Google does not penalize Wix. When a builder site does not rank, it is usually missing separate service pages, city pages, real page titles, phone speed or a link to the Google Business Profile.

Is Wix cheaper than a custom website?

Wix is cheaper on day one because there is no build fee, but the plan and add-ons never stop. Add up three years plus your own time, then compare it with a one-time build and a small monthly care plan.

Can I move my Wix site somewhere else later?

You can keep and transfer your domain, but the site itself cannot be moved off Wix to another host. Leaving means rebuilding. With a custom build, make sure you own both the site files and the domain.
